Maths
At St Leonard’s we use the teaching for mastery approach for mathematics. This approach enables all children to learn the same concepts, no matter their ability. The teaching for mastery approach allows children to develop and secure a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. It uses the CPA approach – concrete (hands on manipulatives), pictorial (visual representations) and abstract (calculations).
Each mathematics lesson follows a set structure:
- Counting
- Factual fluency
- Review
- Guided practise using the I, We, You model
- Independent practise
- Deepening question
We work closely with our maths consultant, Sarah-Anne Fernandes. We follow her cyclical program SolveMaths for our planning. Unlike other mathematics programs, SolveMaths revisits key learning throughout the year to allow children to consolidate their skills. Click below to access Smash Maths.
